Random Musings on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving

College and Pro Football are approaching the finish line and as I listen to all the talking heads out there I am wondering these things:

Week 2 Preview: Maryville/Oakland Headline a Big Weekend

It’s Week 2 in the high school football season in East Tennessee and we’re already gearing up for another Friday night of great action.

Here’s the three biggest games you need to know about.

Oakland at Maryville-

This is a matchup between two of the best teams in the state. Maryville brought home another state title last year while Oakland made its usual deep run in the state playoffs.

These two met twice last season, splitting the series with Oakland the victor in the regular season (ending the Rebels 70 game regular season win streak), but Maryville took home the more important win in the state semifinals.

The Rebels and Patriots met in the state semifinals in 2016 as well, with Oakland coming out on top before losing in the state championship.

In week one, Maryville won over Knoxville Catholic handily, 31-10, with strong performances from running backs Tee Hodge (who recently received an offer from Tennessee) and Bryson Teffeteller. Both will need impressive games Friday to knock off Oakland.

The Rebels will also need a huge game from their offensive line to battle Oakland’s relentless front seven.

Expect Maryville to take this one at home, 24-17.

Austin East at Wayne, Ohio-

Austin East won easily over Gibbs in Week 1, 30-12, with a huge performance from QB Try Foster.

Foster lit up Gibbs defensive backs with 201 yards passing and three touchdowns. The Roadrunners air attack opened up the ground game and Foster added 103 yards on the ground and another touchdown.

AE, however, has to make the long trek into Ohio. It’s hard to know what effect this may have on the Roadrunners high powered offense, but their talent advantage should win out in the end.

AE should win this one by double digits, 31-20.

Dobyns-Bennett at Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge got a huge win to open the season over Hardin Valley, 23-7, while Dobyns Bennett had the unfortunate task of facing what maybe the best team in the state, Greeneville.

Don’t be fooled by Week 1, though. DB is for real, despite the blowout loss to the Green Devils. However, Oak Ridge is formidable, especially on the defensive side. Defensive back Jeremy Mitchell leads a strong Wildcats secondary that will prove too much for the DB.

Expect Oak Ridge to push Dobyns-Bennett to 0-2, 21-10.
