Last Friday night, August 16, Georgia High School Football kicked off its regular season. One of the key games was Buford at Milton in Alpharetta. Milton is the reigning 7a state champion and Buford lost to a very good Grayson team in the state quarter finals.
Everything looked promising, a beautiful night for football, and both teams were loaded with Division 1 caliber talent, including two cornerbacks from Milton and a Running back from Buford who have signed with the University of Tennessee. The corners are and Dylan Lewis and Tyler Redman and the running back is Justin Baker.
Even though the game was close, Milton never trailed. The highlight of the first half was good defense by both teams. Milton would go to the half with a 7-0 lead. For Buford, they had a bright spot for the young team. Their running game was strong. For the first half, their running back duo had 15 carries for 66 yards.
One of the biggest stories of the game was the weather delay, which caused disruption in other games as well. For this game, the delay was two hours, with the second half kicking off at 11:00 p.m. It would be in the second half that Buford would get some life and make it a nail biter. The teams would finish the game in extremely wet and difficult conditions.
Milton scored a touchdown in the third quarter, but with the wet conditions, they were unable to get the extra point. However, it was at the of the third quarter that Buford got a safety, went down the field and scored a touchdown, and got a two point conversion. Even though momentum had shifted somewhat, Milton was able to hold off Buford, winning the game 13-10
Luke Nickel, Milton’s quarterback was 13 for 20 with 167 yards. His favorite target was the night was C.J. Wiley. The wide receiver had 7 catches for 88 yards and a touchdown.
